General Information

The Institute of Water Pollution Control (IWPC) is an important construction base for the discipline of engineering in our school, and the key support for the development of Environmental Science and Engineering (primary discipline) and Environmental Engineering (secondary discipline). The scientific objectives of the IWPC are aimed at the international research frontier and the urgent environmental problems  in China which require a resolution. Taking advantage of  its multi-disciplinary knowledge base in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Microbiology, Biological Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Hydrological Engineering, the Institute carries out research on theory, techniques and engineering in the fields of water pollution control, water environmental protection and remediation and groundwater pollution control.

The IWPC is also an important educational base for undergraduate and graduate students. The institute is authorized to offer Bachelor, Master and PhD degrees in Environmental Engineering. The institute also participates in the construction of post-doctoral stations in the School of Environment.

The IWPC has modern and advanced laboratory equipment and facilities. The IWPC currently has a faculty of 4 professors (including 1 academic of the China National Engineering Research Institute and 1 Humboldt Fellow), 3 associate professors and 2 lecturers. The IWPC has undertaken lots of research projects in recent years and published more than 200 professional papers and 5 textbooks, gaining several ministry-level prizes.

 Research Programs

1. Water pollution control engineering

Based on physic-chemical and biological methods, research is focused on biological techniques, environmental enzyme engineering, aerobic granular sludge culturing, membrane biological reactors, biological removal of nitrogen and phosphate, eutrophication control, environmental microbial detection by molecular biological methods, bio-augmentation for persistent organic pollutants removal, slightly contaminated water purification by physical-chemical and biological methods etc.

2. Water environment remediation techniques and engineering

Research in this area is aimed at the watershed, river, lake, and urban water environment. Innovative techniques are developed for lake eutrophication and swamp control, urban water environment pollution control, river water quality improvement, and physiochemical-biological-ecological purification for natural water bodies.

3. Soil and groundwater remediation

Research topics in this area include transport of contaminants in porous media, vadose zone hydrology, groundwater hydrology, soil/groundwater remediation techniques (e.g., soil vapor extraction, in-situ soil flushing, surfactant-enhanced flushing), isotopes as natural tracers, wastewater recharge and mathematical modeling.
